Villafranca de los Barros is situated in the centre of the Spanish province of Badajoz (Extremadura). It is located close to Almendralejo that is also one of the stops in la Vía de la Plata route and is the second centre of population of the area in the heart of the rich plain of the region of Tierra de Barros, famous for its production of wine.

The climate is of the Mediterranean type influenced by fresh winds coming from the Atlantic coast. Fresh and dry winters with temperatures that oscillate between 13.3º C and 15º C, and hot dry summers with a minimum temperature of 22.1º C which can easily reach 40º C during the day are the defining characteristics of this climate. Precipitation, although very limited, can be observed all throughout the year except during summer (around 400 - 500 mm Autumn-Spring seasons).
